Born in England, Richard Good spent his childhood in Kenya and Nigeria, and the UK. He studied Art and Design in London in the 70’s, after which he worked in London and abroad before setting up his own business. Eventually his desire to concentrate solely on art proved too strong so he and his family moved to Tenerife where he realised his passion.

On Tenerife, the dramatic, ever-changing island landscape and the surrounding ocean were inspirational. The trees, the ocean and rocks inspired much of his work. Travel to Italy, UK and Europe helps him develop the drawings and the evolving themes.

His meticulous pen and ink drawings produce a sculptured rather than shaded effect on the smooth Bristol Board paper.

His acrylic paintings with dark, masked figures, “bodyscapes” where the human body forms the landscape, and eyes staring back at the viewer depict a hauntingly mysterious world.

Richard moved from conventional acrylic on canvas painting to a technique of carving the canvas away with scalpel blades. The intricate semi-transparent surface is then reinforced and painted to reveal the image.

The background image behind the carved canvas increases the depth of the piece. Light falling on, between and behind the surface deepens the viewer’s involvement with the work.

To further engage and intrigue the viewer, Richard uses a tall/wide format, requiring the eye to move over the painting, and the long thin dimensions mean parts of the painting are always slightly out of peripheral vision.
